COMMUNITY
Once my child transitioned to solid food, I donated the remainder of baby food to the local Infant Crisis Services. While touring their facility, I learned they had no resources for mothers who wanted to cloth diaper their babies. As an avid cloth diaper fan, I gave my number to the donation coordinator and asked her to call if there was ever a request. When she calls, I deliver a set of cloth diapers with instructions to the agency.
In my current ministry setting, with the inability to leave the building, active involvement in the community has proven quite difficult, which is why my cloth diaper work is one of my successes. Most protests happen during the week. Candlelight vigils are usually on Sunday evenings. Part of why I desire a called ministry setting is to have a more flexible schedule to join our congregation in community work and organizing.
As your minister, I would be focused on the community events that are important to the congregation first. Whether your excitement is fueled by social, political, environmental, cultural, or interfaith options, I am open to supporting your work as my schedule for the congregation allows.
One avenue I will certainly pursue, in any setting, is interfaith work. As a person who sees value in the wisdom from many traditions, I describe myself as multi-faith, which includes Humanism. In my sermons, I may quote from the Qur'an one week and the Lotus Sutra the next. In the Interfaith work I have accomplished so far, I see the importance of UU voices at the table, because we truly value and teach that many paths are valid. I also have plans to write a series of children's books teaching the world's religions, and this project may come to fruition while I am serving your congregation.
Another pursuit dear to my heart and family is immigrant issues. My child is half Hispanic, my spouse is Hispanic American, and my in-laws are first and second generation immigrants. Uplifting immigrants is extremely important to our family.
Whether it's dedicating a bicycle rack to cyclists in our community as they pass our building, or joining members and friends at the local food pantries, protests, and interfaith events, I look forward to joining you in ways you are active in the community and finding more ways we can be active and serve our communities together.
As UUs, we are in a unique position to be supportive to certain areas, such as environmentalism, the democratic ideal, and the rights of marginalized persons. Our UU faith calls us to action.
